Archive Project : Decomposition of Materiality and Identities, 2020
Initiated in 2018 and publicly presented in 2020, this project laid the foundation for Studio Scarlett Yang’s ongoing material research practice.
The project explored how biological by-products such as algae extract and cocoon protein could be transformed through digital design processes into responsive, biodegradable structures.
It introduced a research methodology that continues to guide the studio’s work, linking biological material systems, computational modelling, and fabrication innovation. The project proposed a way of thinking where materials act as active participants within cycles of transformation and adaptation.
Since then, the research has evolved into a comprehensive studio archive of over 400 biomaterial samples, informing applications across textiles, automotive design, architecture, and large-scale art installations.
The studio has since collaborated with cultural institutions, universities, and design organizations worldwide, sharing its findings through exhibitions, lectures, and R&D consulting.
